International Women's Day
I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by strong, inspirational women as I was growing up who, to this day, continue to instill confidence and humility in any challenge I face. These ladies encountered many hardships in their day; my maternal grandmother immigrated to England at a mere 14 years of age in the 1940’s after spending the majority of her childhood in hospital with ill health. Having to catch up on her missed education in a boarding school, she missed her family terribly and was isolated as the other girls complained they couldn’t understand her strong Cork accent. Nevertheless, she worked tirelessly to catch up and eventually became a nurse before meeting my grandad and subsequently raising her family.
My paternal grandmother began her career as a teacher before becoming a nurse and Midwife. She was passionate that women have the opportunity to carve out fulfilling careers and have a voice in a male dominated era. Granny died in 1997 but her legacy lives on as she encouraged passion and a great determination to succeed. I often wonder what would have become of these strong ladies if they were part of today’s generation. One thing is for sure, they would have made the very most of every opportunity available to them and if they fell, they would get back up again, wiser, and stronger with an increased drive and fortitude. I witness this strength of character also in my own Mum; the most gentle, serene, and clear-thinking lady I know, who has patience in abundance. Mum is my biggest advocate, the belief she holds in me, and my capabilities is unquestionable, even when I, very often, question it myself. Never boastful or forceful in their ways, these ladies have been my greatest teachers. Whilst we will not read about them in history books, they are part of my history as their quiet, yet determined nature has taught me resilience and resolve. They are the embodiment of humility who I want to celebrate.
So, on this International Woman’s Day lets look at the women in our own families who we hold dear in our hearts and have shaped our attitudes, instilled kindness, demonstrated humility and a strength of mind to take on new challenges and support one another in an increasingly challenging world.
